Verstappen posts quickest lap for third straight practice at Canadian GP

MONTREAL — Max Verstappen of the Netherlands posted the fastest lap in the third practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday morning.

The Red Bull driver was quickest in all three practice sessions at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, having dominated both runs on Friday.

Qualifying is set for later Saturday, with the race on Sunday.

Verstappen’s best tour of the 4.361-kilometre track was one minute 11.559 seconds.

The two Ferrari cars driven by Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were second and third respectively — only .002 of a second apart at 1:11.648 and 1:11.650.

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton tried out the quick hypersoft tires on his Mercedes for the first time in his final laps but managed only fourth fastest at 1:11.706. Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull was fifth at 1:12.153 and Valtteri Bottas was sixth for Mercedes at 1:12.255.

Lance Stroll of Montreal was slowest on the 20-car grid at 1:13.968.

“I can’t get the car to turn on Turn 2,” the Williams driver told his garage over the radio.

Stoffel Vandoorne, who hit a wall in practice Friday and needed repairs, spun his McLaren 13 minutes in and needed a minute to get turned around and back on course.
