MERRITT, B.C.— Earlier this week, it was announced the provincial government was engaging with commercial truck drivers about changing the regulations when it comes to using tire chains on their trucks during winter driving conditions.

The proposed changes include increasing the number of chains each vehicle is required to deploy on each vehicle from the current minimum of one tire, a specific industry standard for chain quality, and increasing the fines for not following chain-up rules. Merritt Mayor Neil Menard has been vocal in his concerns about safety on Coquihalla Highway and says he’s happy to hear the province is taking action.

“[The BC Government] has sent us a list of things they’re hoping to do,” Menard told CFJC Today. “They’ve also suggested we send some stuff to Minister Eby, the Attorney General, because it’s his area – education for drivers, ICBC, making sure [truck drivers], have proper steel chains, know how to chain-up properly, know how to drive on mountain highways. It’s all got to happen because that’s part of the problem up there.”

Menard says travel can be difficult in the winter, not only for those passing through his community but for residents as well who need to go to larger centres for a variety of reasons. While he’s pleased the government is taking action, he says he plans to continue to lobby for better maintenance on the highways that pass through his community.
