MERRITT — A combination of cooler weather and hard work by wildfire crews have helped tame a blaze near Merritt.

The 53-hectare Chataway Lake fire, located 27 kilometres northwest of Merritt, is now under control.

Brenna Ward, fire information officer with the BC Wildfire Service, says there are 20 firefighters on scene today focusing on “final suppression efforts.”

“So, we don’t have any air support or heavy equipment anymore because it’s 100 per cent machine guarded. So, right now crews are working on the mop up stage which means working through the interior to extinguish hot spots.”
