Royal Wedding Dress Contraversy

Designer Emilia Wickstead is responded after her alleged comments about Meghan Markle‘s wedding dress created a furor online.

She posted a message on Instagram writing, “I am extremely saddened by commentary that has appeared in the press and online over the past few days.”

  • “Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admiration and respect for her,” she continued. “I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy, a huge source of inspiration to me.”
  • She concluded her post by saying, “I wish Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a wonderful, happy and love filled life together, Emilia.”
  • Wickstead was one of Kate Middleton‘s favorite designers, and she was quoted in The Daily Mail as saying that the dress Markle wore to marry Prince Harry was “identical to one of our dresses.” Markle’s dress, as Wickstead acknowledged over Instagram, was designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.
  • According to the DM, she also had some unkind things to say about the fit of Markle’s dress: “If you choose a simple design the fit should be perfect. Her wedding dress was quite loose.” Katy Perry also said that Markle’s dress was too loose, claiming she needed “one more fitting.”
  • Waight Keller, meanwhile, has responded to all of the criticism herself, explaining that Markle had eight fittings before her wedding and opted for a simple but strong silhouette.
  • “We very quickly agreed on the perfect dress,” she says. “I wanted a modern and fresh silhouette while respecting her style.”
