Allie Lake wildfire restriction area changes announced

KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service has announced changes to the Allie Lake area restriction for Crown land.

The change went into effect today at noon.

“The order is in place to accommodate firefighting operations, ensure the safety of firefighters, and protect public safety,” reads a government news release.

Allie Lake Fire Information Officer Heather Rice adds the area restriction is still over the primary area of the first restriction though the BC Wildfire Service “slightly modified” it.

“So, it goes right along the southern boundary of Bonaparte Lake instead of right through the middle of the lake. It made the boundary seem a bit more sensible on the ground.”

The amended area restriction will remain in place until Oct. 31, 2018, or until it is rescinded. The amended order does not apply to foreshore areas, or Crown land covered by water, within the restricted area.

Under the Wildfire Act, a person must not remain in or enter the restricted area without the prior written authorization.

However the following exceptions apply:

(a) travelling to or from his or her primary residence;
(b) travelling to or from private or leased property for the purpose of accessing his or her secondary residence or recreational property;
(c) travelling as a person acting in an official capacity;
(d) travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities;
(e) engaging and/or participating in agricultural activities pertaining to livestock management on private or leased property;
(f) engaging and/or participating in a commercial activity within the regular course of the person’s business or employment on private or leased lands; or
(g) are customers of commercial businesses that engage in an activity using the foreshore or Crown land covered by water.

The 2,700 hectare blaze, located north of Savona, is now 35 per cent contained.
