Flood threat closes Highway 8

MERRITT, B.C. — Motorists beware: the rapid increase in flood waters has closed Highway 8 in both direction at 10 Mile Bridge, 10 kilometres west of Merritt city centre.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District says maintenance crews will continue emergency work throughout the day and there is no word yet on when it will reopen.

However the TNRD notes emergency crews will continue to have access to the highway as needed.

Emergency Information Officer Michelle Nordstrom says flooding has prompted evacuation alerts for 63 residences in the area and 18 evacuation orders.

She says the TNRD actually downgraded some of its evacuation orders today to an alert status meaning some people in the Lower Nicola Mobile Home Park and others areas of Lower Nicola are able to go home today at 12 noon.
