Walk for Alzheimer’s set for Sunday

KAMLOOPS — Organizers are expecting hundreds of participants at the 15th annual Investor’s Group Walk for Alzheimer’s this Sunday. 

Between 600 and 800 people are expected to show up for the walk to honour and support loved ones living with the disease. 

The event raises money for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. That money helps fund research as well as programs and services for people affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia. 

“Our goal for this year in Kamloops is $75,000,” said Support and Education Coordinator Tara Hildebrand. “We are way more than half way there. As of yesterday I checked and we were over $40,000, so we’re doing really really well.”

More than 70,000 British Columbians are living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, but the number is likely much higher due to unreported cases. 

Hildebrand says it’s important to watch for early signs of the disease. 

“There’s a lot of people that are living on their own that aren’t even flagged in the system because they don’t have a care partner and they think they’re doing really well right now when maybe they might be showing early signs,” she said. 

“Those early signs are really difficult to detect and as the disease progresses that person isn’t going to be able to detect them on their own, so this is why having care partners is so vitally important.”
