Junior Blazers lose bronze medal in overtime after epic tying goal

KAMLOOPS — It was an epic finish, just not the result the Thompson Junior Blazers wanted.

Down 2-1 in the dying seconds, the Junior Blazers’ tournament MVP Carter Streek came to the rescue, poking the puck in with 4.1 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

“The puck squirts out to Reagan [Milburn], Reagan made a great play in front and it’s just in the back of the net,” Streek said of his late-game heroics.

But 37 seconds into the extra frame, the Winnipeg Hawks struck on a rocket by Nathan Goodbrandson, who wired it top corner for his second goal of the game to give the Hawks the win and the bronze medal.

Goodbrandson opened the scoring for the Hawks in the first before the Junior Blazers responded with a goal by Zakery Anderson from Streek and Branden Toye.

The hosts thought they made it 2-1 in the second when the puck, which looked to be crossing the line, was swatted in with a high stick by Streek, a call the 14-year-old disagreed with.

Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead, which stood until the Blazers scored late.

For the Thompson Junior Blazers, who came in as underdogs as the host after losing in the final of the Okanagan, nearly winning the bronze was extremely disappointed but also showed they could play with all the teams.

An emotional Kyle Allan said after the game that he treasured this group that cared so much for each other, and that makes the bronze-medal loss that much harder.

“It was a special group,” Allan said. “It’s a good group to have – kids that worked hard, they cared for each other all year long. You can’t ask for anything more.”

As for Streek, the first-year Bantam that burst onto the scene with five goals and three assists in five games, the loss hurts but he’s happy with how he and the team played.
