Selena Spills on Role Models

Feb 9, 2018 | 5:15 AM

Selena Gomez is a role model to millions of fans, and she has role models of her own. Asked to name her biggest female role models for the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Selena says, “Meryl Streep has always been one of my idols because of her elegance and ability to always be true to herself but play these incredibly complex, difficult characters. I love how she carries herself.”

“I feel the same way about Grace VanderWaal, who’s, like, 14 years old,” Selena adds, referring to the teen who won America’s Got Talent.

Finally, Selena says, “I really love [human rights attorney] Amal Clooney. I know that sounds weird, but I’ve read a lot about her.”

While she might admire Meryl Streep, Selena didn’t choose her when asked to name an actress from the past that she’d like to trade places with. Instead, Selena said, “Either Audrey Hepburn or Molly Ringwald in the ’80s. How amazing must that have been? She was a redhead and had freckles and was so incredibly cool. I still want to dress like her in Pretty in Pink.”

In the same interview, Selena says we may have wait a long time for a new album from her. “My next album has been forever in the making. When people ask me why, I’m honest about it: It’s because I haven’t been ready. I mean, point-blank, I don’t feel confident enough in where my music is yet,” she said. “If that takes 10 years, then it takes 10 years. I don’t care,” she adds. “Right now I just want to be super intentional with all of the things I’m doing.”
