Closing arguments expected in trial of man charged with killing off-duty officer

HALIFAX — Lawyers are expected to make closing arguments today in the high-profile murder trial of a Halifax man charged with killing off-duty police officer Catherine Campbell.

The Crown alleges Christopher Garnier punched and strangled the 36-year-old constable inside an apartment after they met at a Halifax bar for the first time on Sept. 11, 2015.

The Crown has argued that Garnier used a compost bin to dispose of her body near Halifax’s Macdonald Bridge, where it was found five days later.

Garnier’s lawyer called his final witness last week after telling a Nova Scotia Supreme Court jury that Campbell died accidentally during rough sex.
