Elephant Hill fire slowly creeps towards Highway 24

CARIBOO, B.C. — Heavy winds could push the Elephant Hill wildfire closer to Highway 24.

Fire Information Officer Claire Allen says southwest winds are expected to kick up to 40 kilometres an hour this afternoon and into the evening which could push the northern flanke of the fire closer to the highway.

The 186-thousand hectare blaze is currently 2.5 kilometres south of Jack Frost Lake and five kilometres south of Highway 24.

Allen says because of the direction of the wind, properties along Highway 97 including 70 Mile House and 100 Mile House aren’t in danger at this time.

Properties along Highway 24 remain under an evacuation order as a precaution with fire crews working hard to put up containment lines north and west of the fire.

A Crown land restriction has been issued for areas around the Elephant Hill wildfire as of Saturday afternoon to give crews more space to fight the fire.
