KAMLOOPS — If trophies were handed out for sticking around in games, the Kamloops Broncos would win their fair share.
The Broncos rallied in the fourth quarter against the Langley Rams at Hillside Stadium Saturday night but came up short yet again to drop their fourth straight game, by a score 31-19.
After the Kamloops offence opened the scoring in the first quarter on an interception returned for a major score, the Rams scored 24 straight points, before the Broncos were able to answer back.
After Colby Henkel connected with Nick Hykawy in the third quarter to get the Broncos within 10, Kamloops got a 21-yard field goal off the boot of Landon Munk to get within a converted touchdown of the Rams.
Things looked to be going the Broncos way, as Langley had a pair of big plays called back on penalties. With the Rams on their own one-yard line Justin Haverkamp, Kurtis Mutchmann, and Josh Middlemiss applied some heavy pressure to the Langley offensive line, eventually bringing down Rams QB Rylan Matters in his own end zone for the safety, which brought Kamloops to within five.
That’s as close as the Broncos would get. Rams RB Nathan Lund would score on a 16-yard carry in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Langley.
After the game, Broncos head coach Brad Yamaoka says the difference in the game was Langley’s ability to execute when the game was on the line.
“We’ve just got to learn how to win these games. You know, it’s execution; making plays when you need to make a play. They made plays when they needed to make a play, and we didn’t,” Yamaoka explained.
The Broncos head into their BCFC bye week with a 1-4 record, which is good for fifth place in the six team conference. Kamloops will return to action on the road against the Westshore Rebels on September 9th.
