Snowboarder dies in avalanche in France, 2 others missing
PARIS — Police in the town of Modane, near the French Alps ski resort of Valfrejus, are searching for two people still missing following an avalanche that killed a Dutch snowboarder.
About 60 rescuers, plus rescue dogs, continued the search Wednesday, the day after the avalanche struck on an off-piste sector near Valfrejus, close to the Italian border.
Police said the risk of new snow slides in the same sector remains high, and the zone needed to be secured with artificially triggered avalanches before the search resumed.
The victim’s body was found late on Tuesday evening. Rescue operations were slowed down by bad weather conditions.
