KAMLOOPS — RCMP were out targeting long weekend drivers, and issued no fewer than 187 tickets in a variety of traffic operations Thursday and Friday.
Mounties joined CVSE officers on Westsyde Road, Morven Place, McQueen Drive, Ord Road, the Halston Bridge, Hillside Drive and Batchelor Drive.
Corporal Jodi Shelkie says of the 187 people ticketed, most of them were speeding.
“This included 161 tickets for speeding, and then 26 other violation tickets for a variety of offences. One vehicle was impounded for seven days for excessive speed; the driver was doing 124km/h in a 70km/h zone on the Halston Bridge,” explained Cpl. Shelkie.
She added getting caught driving that fast hits the pocketbook hard.
“It’s not just the violation ticket they’re paying for. If you are doing excessive speed, and you lose your vehicle for seven days, the driver is also paying for the tow bill, and the rental for the car being stored at the towing company. So it’s quite a heavy bill to pay for excessive speed.”
Despite the spate of tickets, Shelkie says it was a great long weekend from a safety perspective.
The only significant crash in the Kamloops area took place yesterday at Sixth Avenue and Seymour Street, with no major injuries as a result.
On May 19th, Kamloops RCMP conducted a traffic enforcement blitz where 16 people were ticketed for not wearing seat belts.
