Jumanji wins box office for 3rd Weekend

Jumanji out muscled its competition at the box office again this week, despite the entry of three newbies, including 12 Strong and Den of Thieves, which were aimed at older male audiences. Both raked in box office receipts in the mid-teens, while Jumanji brought in about $19 million.

Weekend sales overall brought in about $133.3 million, down about 8% year-over-year.

  • 12 Strong is meeting industry expectations, while Den of Thieves is actually beating them, Deadline reports. Both cost about $30 million before P&A, though Den took 15 years to make it the big screen.
  • “Any of these films that you struggle to get made over a decade over even longer, it’s incredibly satisfying and with such strong results it confirms your instincts really,” producer Tucker Tooley told Deadline. 50 Cent and Butler, who star in the film, are socially engaged, which is helping to drive interest in the low-budget action flick.
  • Chris Hemsworth, meanwhile, stars in 12 Strong, and he is also helping to drive engagement and put more people in seats, Deadline reports.
