Daredevil drivers and windrow warriors will never change

KAMLOOPS — This is kind of a rhetorical question, but will Kamloops drivers ever smarten up?

One would think they might get the big picture with the return of winter we had a few days ago, wouldn’t you?

But, it seems, different conditions don’t produce different drivers. The speeders, the red-light runners, the in-and-out lane dodgers, the tailgaters all carry on in the worst possible road conditions as if we live in a land where the sun always shines and the roads are always bare.

I had to venture onto a local highway the other night and it turned into quite the white knuckler. When I left for a meeting, the sky was clear and so was the pavement. By the time I left for home, we were into near-whiteout conditions, but that didn’t slow anybody down – the 4X4s, SUVs, little white sedans and big semis blew past me as if they were invincible and I was just in the way.

Then, of course, there are your everyday urban daredevils who swerve around other drivers stopped at crosswalks, don’t know what their signal lights are for, blow through intersections and flip you the finger if you’re not putting the pedal to the metal or otherwise performing to their expectations.

And how about the windrow warriors – those hardy toilers on their little yard tractors who figure it’s a wonderful idea to plow snow out of their driveways to the other side of the street, leaving Everest-sized ridges that rattle your teeth like giant rumble strips.

There oughta be a law. Wait a minute, there is… quite a few of them in fact. It’s just that somebody forgot to tell certain people traffic laws are more than a dumb idea.

And as for that thretorical question? Actually, it’s not so rhetorical. The answer is obviously a definite no.
