Weather alert issued for Coquihalla Highway

KAMLOOPS — It may be spring, but winter conditions are expected to return in a big way Thursday to the Coquihalla Highway.

Meteorologist Lisa West says the passage of a cold front will result in a sudden change in precipitation from rain to heavy snow resulting in reduced visibility and possible rapid accumulation of snow. Temperatures are also expected to drop along with the snow level.

“What’s going to happen for drivers on the roads is precipitation is going to start off as rain and then as freezing levels fall throughout the afternoon, we’re going to see the switch over to snow in the mid to late afternoon hours and then having that snow continuing right through the evening as we move even further into that colder air mass. So, we could be looking at a quick 10 to 15 centimetres for the southern highways.”

West says a safer bet for motorists would be the Fraser Canyon, where 5 to 10 millimetres of rain is expected.
