KAMLOOPS — A suspect in a police pursuit north of Kamloops yesterday remains on the loose.

The driver of an SUV took off when Kamloops RCMP tried to pull him over for rolling through a stop sign Wednesday afternoon.

In the course of evading officers, the man is alleged to have rammed a police cruiser.

Laurie Sallows works at the Heffley Creek Husky station, and says the suspect paid a quick visit to fuel up just before the pursuit, leaving a hefty tip.

“He handed me $20 and said, ‘I need $20 on pump four.’ So I set the pump. It was a little while later that I looked and on my (indicator) it was showing that the pump outside wasn’t hung up. I looked out and there was no one out there. So I went out and the nozzle was just laying on the ground. The guy only pumped $4.44 of the $20 he gave me and never came back for his change,” said Sallows.

Police officers arrived at the gas station a short time later and asked to view surveillance footage.

Sallows says the video shows the man moving quickly, but she notes he doesn’t seem panicked.

“He kind of gets out of his truck and he throws a hat on, comes in the store, goes back out, pumps a bit of gas and then he just drove away. There was no freaking out or running around or anything.”

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it’s believed the suspect filled up just prior to rolling through the stop sign.

Shelkie says he then headed south toward Rayleigh, where officers tried to box his vehicle in.

The suspect is alleged to have hit an RCMP cruiser in the course of his escape, and then went north on Highway 5 toward Barriere, which is when police lost track of him.
