KAMLOOPS — Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod says hints that the federal government may tax medical and dental benefits are not going over with her constituents.

A December National Post story revealed that the government is considering a tax on private benefit plans that would raise $2.9 billion.

“What this government has is a spending problem, and it’s raising taxes to deal with its spending problem,” stated McLeod.

McLeod explains that would be extremely unpopular, and could result in catastrophic consequences.

“This week alone, I had hundreds of people that wrote my office very, very concerned. Certainly it would add dramatically to their tax bills. As importantly, when Quebec made that change many of the private employers actually just got rid of the medical/dental plans all together.”

McLeod says all of the emails she has received will be forwarded to Finance Minister Bill Morneau as he crafts the next federal budget.

“We’re certainly sending all these e-mails to the finance minister. They’re making the budget right now, they are crafting the budget. It is not too late for them perhaps to change their mind. We are making them aware that this is a very unpopular move.”
