KAMLOOPS — KGHM-Ajax says it will no longer fund the City of Kamloops’ independent consultant looking into the Ajax environmental application.

Council authorized an extra $200,000 for SLR Consulting’s review of the application at its meeting on October 4.

The decision was followed by a resolution to ask KGHM-Ajax to fund the expanded budget, as it had the initial $300,000.

In a letter to council dated October 19, Project Manager Chris Wild says, “Unfortunately, we will not be able to help the City of Kamloops further with this review, which is happening outside the joint federal-provincial environmental assessment process.

Wild goes on to say the company has fully honoured its initial commitment, but planned a budget for 2016 “focused on completing the regulatory environmental assessment process.”

That would mean the $200,000 cost of the expanded budget would be passed to taxpayers, though council will discuss the matter at its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 25.
