Public Access: KGHM Ajax to file environmental application

KAMLOOPS — Residents will get their first look at the final proposal for the KGHM-Ajax copper-gold mine Monday.

That’s when the company will submit its application to the Environmental Assessment Office, and that 18-thousand page report will be made public on the EAO website.

External Affairs Manager Yves Lacasse says a day later, a plain language report will be available on the Ajax website.

“We are having consultants summarize very complex, high-level reports into plain language summaries, something that we think is going to be very beneficial to the community – instead of reading hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of pages you will be able to read something that will be anywhere between 12 to 40 pages,” Lacasse told CFJC Today.

Lacasse adds the submission Monday marks a significant milestone for the mine project, as it is now out of the hands of the company.

Monday’s submission will also trigger a 75-day public comment period.

Lacasse adds he hopes the EAO makes a decision on allowing the mine by the end of 2016.
