Kamloops Sunrays’ artistic swimming season highlighted by podium finishes at nationals, provincials

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Sunrays reached the podium at each event in which they participated this season, according to a club press release.

National stream team members Nadia Curtis, Kate Liebe, Hailey MacPhee, Nevaeh Manuel-Hearn and Taya Angstadt won bronze at the Canadian Championships in Montreal, with help from coach Disa Fladmark.

“Their sports-themed routine captivated audiences and judges alike, earning them a well-deserved spot on the podium and cementing their status as one of the country’s top artistic swimming clubs,” reads the club release.

Fladmark earned the BC Artistic Swimming Mable Moran Award, which is handed to a club member who shows excellence in fostering growth of artistic swimming in the province.

The Sunrays were fixtures on the podium at the Jean Peters Provincial Championship.

In the under-13 to under-15 division, Avery Matson, Hannah Seer, Cora Belanger, Lucee Ward, Alix McNamara and Lucy Cuthbert won bronze.

Tina Naveri, Cassidy Beaver-Nicol and Lizzy Ignace coached the team.

The 10-and-under squad of Makenna Watson, Khloe Watson, Abbey Bennett, Gia Belanger, Harper Jonsson and Mackenzie Walsh claimed gold.

“Their precision and synchronicity in the water left spectators in awe, showcasing the depth of talent within the Sunrays’ ranks,” according to the release.

Naveri and Beaver-Nicol coached the team.

Matson and Jonsson won silver medals in solo competition, “further solidifying the Sunrays’ dominance across all levels of competition,” according to the release.

“This season has been truly special,” head coach Naveri said. “The dedication and hard work of our athletes and coaches have been nothing short of inspiring and I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished together.”
