COLLINS: Gird your loins — the construction mayhem continues
EVERY SPRING, summer and fall, construction crews take to the streets to create traffic mayhem. Why do we have to do this in summer, when it screws up traffic, hurts businesses in the area, and gives tourists to the city fits of frustration? The reality, of course, is different than the conjecture.
Firstly, the work has to be done. Some of these projects have been stalled for too long. Some of them are simple, some much too complicated to be done quickly.
Probably the biggest and most expensive job is the Landsdowne sewer reconstruction project. If we want to continue to grow, we have to provide the facilities to ensure developers can build to the standards necessary. But this project covers most of Lansdowne and we are only now in the second phase. As a result, the business community on Lansdowne will have to tough things out for some time yet.
Traffic downtown has been a total mess and won’t likely improve until the work is completely done. Canada Day attendance will be severely impacted, no question.
