KAMLOOPS — Residents in Juniper Ridge and Rose Hill who have been meaning to part ways with their cedar bushes can leave them at the end of their streets for pickup next month.

The City of Kamloops and Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) will hold a one-day chipping service for 20 residents each in both the Juniper Ridge and Rose Hill neighbourhoods. In a news release issued Monday (April 22), the city says Juniper Ridge and Rose Hill have been identified as priority areas for the free chipping service due to their proximity to green spaces and high volume of requests for FireSmart assessments.

“Now is the time for all residents to start thinking about what they can do around their homes to have the best chance should a wildfire advance on their home,” Jeff Pont, KFR life and fire safety educator, says. “FireSmart is an amazing program with incredible results. The first step in creating a FireSmart zone is to remove all the combustibles around your home, and cedars are a great place to start.”

Chipping will take place in Juniper Ridge on May 13 and in Rosehill on May 14. Residents must register their property with Kamloops Fire Rescue at 250-320-7641.

The city states residents must remove their cedar hedges and place them at the edge of their property by the street. A crew will arrive on the scheduled day to chip the hedges. Residents do not need to be home.
