KAMLOOPS — Simranjit Singh is trumpeting a new era for the Kamloops Cricket Club (KCC).

“We are trying to establish the club for a long-term purpose and the main purpose is to implement and foster the game of cricket in the Interior and trying to get more people involved,” said Singh, vice-president and secretary for the club, which boasts about 35 regulars.

“Many people are interested in the sport, but given there has not been an organized structure, they just do not know the process. This year is the first being organized in that long-term vision of the club.”

Singh said the club has registered as a not-for-profit organization with the province and is committed to playing in multiple leagues this season, offering more roster spots and opportunity to play.

Rae-Mor Park in Rayleigh is home base for the KCC, which will toil this season in the B.C. Mainland Cricket League and an Interior recreation circuit that includes competition from Kelowna, Vernon, Salmon Arm, Osoyoos and Oliver, according to Singh.

The club will begin its BCMCL campaign later this month with a road game on the Coast, with its home-opening match scheduled for June 15 at Rae-Mor Park.

Kamloops will play host to an Interior league tilt on May 12 at Rae-Mor Park.

Singh said this is an important year for cricket in the country, as Canada will make its debut in the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup, which will take place in June in the U.S. and West Indies.

The Kamloops club — which has been around since 2014 — is slated to host an Interior recreational league tilt on May 12 at Rae-Mor Park and plans to host an annual tournament this September featuring teams from across B.C.
