Kamloops RCMP weekend includes backpack containing loaded gun found on Brocklehurst lawn

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are coming off a busy weekend, responding to about 358 calls between Friday (Feb. 17) and 9:00 a.m. on Monday.

These are some of the more significant files police responded to.

Downtown robbery (2023-5711)

RCMP are investigating after a woman reported being robbed of cash and a Bluetooth speaker.

The incident took place in the alley behind the 500-block of Victoria Street at about 9:15 p.m. Friday.

Police say the victim reported being hit with a blunt object before the assailant took her wallet and speaker.

The suspect is described as a female with darker complexion, black hair, a black toque and dark clothing.

RCMP do not believe the incident was random in nature.

Robbery caught on dashcam (2023-5695)

At about 5:11 p.m. Friday, officers were informed of an assault and robbery near Seymour Street and Sixth Avenue.

The person filing the report told police they were driving in the area when they saw two suspects run up to the male victim, assault him and take his belongings.

Suspect #1 description:

  • White male
  • In his 20s
  • Scruffy facial hair
  • Glasses
  • Wearing a yellow backpack, green hoodie and ripped blue jeans

Suspect #2 description:

  • Male
  • Teardrop tattoo under his left eye
  • Army leggings
  • Wearing a black parka with fur hood

Victim description:

  • Older male
  • Skinny
  • Wearing a black winter coat and jeans

While the episode was captured on dashcam, RCMP are asking anyone else with video footage or a witness account to come forward.

Fight leads to breach arrest (2023-5725)

Officers were called to a fight in the 700-block of Sydney Avenue at about 10:00 p.m. Friday.

Police say one suspect was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon. Officers also discovered an alleged breach of release conditions.

The man was held for court and remanded in custody. He is next expected in court Thursday (Feb. 23).

Gun found in discarded backpack (2023-5773)

RCMP are trying to hunt down the person who left a backpack containing a loaded gun on a Brocklehurst yard.

Police say the backpack was found Saturday at about 1:00 p.m. on a front lawn in the 2500-block of Tranquille Road.

The suspected handgun found inside was loaded with more ammunition present.

The Kamloops detachment’s Forensic Identification Unit is investigating, but RCMP are also asking for anyone with video or other information as to how it ended up on the front lawn to contact them.

High-risk takedown yields pistol-looking pellet gun (2023-5817)

Officers rushed to the TRU campus Saturday evening after the report of a person with a gun.

The caller reported two people at the University Way lookout, one appearing to be carrying a gun and pointing at the road.

Multiple officers responded, finding the two people, one with a pistol in hand. A high-risk takedown resulted in both being taken into custody.

RCMP believe the gun was, in fact, a realistic-looking pellet gun.

Investigators do not believe it was meant for criminal purposes and the suspect relinquished it to officers for destruction. The suspects were released.

Mental health call leads to assaulted officer (2023-5853)

At about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a home in the 1000-block of Columbia Street for a man reported to be intoxicated and experiencing a mental health crisis.

RCMP say the man was threatening the people present. When members tried to place him under arrest, they say he tried to grab a weapon before being stopped by officers. Police say the man continued to resist arrest and assault officers.

Once he was subdued, the man was taken to cells to sober up.

Man arrested after doorbell camera captures suspicious incident (2023-5944)

At about 4:30 a.m. Monday, Mounties were called to the Collingwood Drive area of Westmount. A doorbell camera had captured a woman knocking on the door of a home before being pulled away by another person.

Responding officers tracked the woman down before arresting a man for assault and breach.
