KAMLOOPS — Kolby Hay feels like he had a good camp with Edmonton Oil Kings, and the 15-year-old goaltender from Kamloops has been rewarded by signing a standard WHL contract.

“They wanted to see how I would perform over main camp and I think I put on a pretty good show,” said Hay, who will be travelling back home on Wednesday.

Hay was drafted by the Oil Kings in the third round, 62nd overall. He will return to the Yale Hockey Academy in Abbotsford with its Midget Prep team. Last season with the Bantam Prep team, he backstopped the team to a Canadian bantam championship.

Hay will be eligible to play five games with Edmonton this season, but hopes to be a factor at training camp next year.

“This season’s going to be focused on development,” he said. “When next season comes around, my goal is to crack the line-up as a 16 year old.”

The Oil Kings captured the Central Division last season with a 42-18-4-4 record and lost in the Eastern Conference Final to the Prince Albert Raiders. The organization is happy to have Hay in the fold.

“Kolby is a big goalie who plays a very solid positional game,” said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. “He tracks pucks well, controls rebounds and competes hard in the crease. We were very happy that Kolby was available when he was in the Draft and see a lot of upside in his development.”
