KAMLOOPS — A 43-year-old man has been arrested after breaking into a city-owned building and being caught by a civilian.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that a citizen called police to report that he could see someone inside the warehouse on Mission Flats Road at roughly 6:00 a.m. today, Oct. 15. Officers arrived and the canine unit tracked down the suspect hiding inside.

Shelkie says the suspect had forced a door open to gain entry, but nothing was taken from the building.

The suspect has been released with a future court date, and he was previously known to police and is from Kamloops.

A Facebook post by Kamloops firefighter David Sakaki this morning detailed how he went to the Kamloops Fire Fighters Charitable Society warehouse at 5:00 a.m., and found that someone had broken in.

“They were still in the building so I barricaded the side exit, called 911 and waited by the main enterance,” Sakaki’s post states. “RCMP were on scene in minutes and the police dog arrived soon after. The intruder didn’t have a chance at escape.”
