LUMBY — More details have been released about the recovery of a man’s body near Mabel Lake in the Lumby area.

The Coroners Service is working to officially determine the identity of the person, but police say the remains match those of a male in his 50’s.

John Keely, a 58 year old Vernon teacher, has been missing since July 18 after going kayaking on Mabel Lake.

The body was located last Friday by Vernon Search and Rescue near the south end of the lake, about 250 metres up a steep embankment.

“The ground search and recovery of the body was very difficult due to the hazardous terrain and dense foliage, requiring both teamwork and technical rope gear,” says Vernon Search and Rescue Director Trevor Honigman.

Numerous volunteers from Vernon Search and Rescue spent countless hours working alongside the RCMP during the search for the missing kayaker,” says Cst. Kelly Brett.

Brett says the search for the missing kayaker has now been called off, and the BC Corners Service has taken control of the investigation.
