Monument honouring Chinese-Canadians unveiled in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — A monument recognizing Chinese-Canadians contributions to B.C was unveiled Saturday afternoon.

Liberal party members, Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and various community members and residents gathered at the Kamloops Chinese Heritage Cemetery for the unveiling of the steel-plaque monument detailing B.C’s 2014 apology for historical wrongdoings to Chinese Canadians, most notably the Chinese Head Tax.

The province says it’s also a reminder of the Chinese workers who contributed to the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 1800s.

Teresa Watt, Minister of International Trade, called the day monumental.

“It means a lot because for the first time the B.C recognizes the contribution of Chinese Canadians since the late 1800s to the prosperity and construction of the Kamloops area,” said Watt. “Today is a historic day.”

The monument is one of 15 being established throughout B.C.
