Alert neighbour helps police track down thief

KAMLOOPS — They say the early bird gets the worm, or in this case, a 30 year old suspect.

Police received a call this morning, June 7, at 6:00 a.m. from an alert citizen who noticed a suspicious individual sifting through his neighbour’s car in the Sahali area.

The caller provided police with a detailed description of the suspect, and shortly after, the Mounties had their man.

During the pursuit, the man ditched a backpack that was later located and appeared to contain a number of stolen items as well as drugs.

The suspect is now facing charges including theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

“This is a great example of neighbours looking out for neighbours,” stated Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie in a news release.

“Police can’t be everywhere so we rely on citizens calling us to let us know if something suspicious is happening in their area.  In this case, the witness had a detailed description of the male and his direction of travel.  This aided the officers in locating the suspect.”
