SD73 Superintendent Karl de Bruijn to retire

Two years after its last superintendent search, the search is on once again at the Kamloops-Thompson School District.

Superintendent Karl de Bruijn announced his retirement effective this July at the Monday November 23rd Board of Education meeting.

“It has been a really great career, I’ve enjoyed for the most part” said de Bruijn. “I certainly have mixed feelings about leaving. I just did not think I would be able to commit another 4 to 5 years which is really what the district needs.”

Board Chair Denise Harper says de Bruijn had already delayed his retirement once and this move was expected. Harper adds the board would like to have de Bruijn’s successor chosen by the end of March.

“To a certain degree, we would be looking for someone who was of a similar attitude.” Denise Harper said, adding the board looks for ethical leadership, and a well rounded leader. 

Harper paid tribute to the outgoing superintendent, saying de Bruijn went from being a groundskeeper to a teacher to an administrator.
