Lady Gaga and her mom Cynthia Germanotta were in attendance at the Children Mending Hearts’ Empathy Rocks event on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The mother and daughter were honored with the Global Changemakers Award for starting the Born This Way Foundation.

Other honorees at the event included Heart of the Future Award recipient Storm Reid, Spotlight Hero Award recipient Camila Mendes, and Hero of Imagination Award recipient Madelaine Petsch.

The event was hosted by Holland Roden and other stars in attendance included 13 Reasons Why’s Ajiona Alexus, Justin Prentice, and Devin Druid, as well as Candice King, Chloe x Halle, Emma Kenney, Maddie Ziegler, Sasha Alexander, and Madelaine’s boyfriend Travis Mills.

Gaga told the audience that the key to their work was kindness. “Kindness is not an afterthought to our work or just the way we’ve chosen to brand it,” she said. “It is the driving power behind everything that we do. It is the lens we view every challenge through and it is framing the way that we put everything around every possible solution. To me, almost every problem you can think of can be solved with kindness, or at least it could be made better.”
