July 20, 1936 – January 21, 2017
John peacefully passed away January 21st, surrounded by his family in a room full of love.
John will forever be remembered by his sons Harry Yanchuk (Janet), Joseph Yanchuk, Gordon Yanchuk (Carmen), Robert Yanchuk (Robyn), grandchildren Travis Yanchuk, Stephanie Dupont (Mikel), Megan Yanchuk, Christopher Yanchuk, brother Nick Yanchuk (Peggy), sister Rose Kazakoff (Bill), sister Eunice French (Jim), aunt Lena Bonar, brother-in-law Robert Derraugh (Elaine) and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and many friends.
John was predeceased by his wife Janet Yanchuk, father and mother, Harry and Mary Yanchuk, brothers Joseph Yanchuk and Mathew Yanchuk, nephew Daniel Kazakoff, father-in-law and mother-in-law Jack and Mary Derraugh.
Dad was born on July 20, 1936 in West Bend Saskatchewan and at the age of three the family moved to Vancouver. There young John enjoyed many sports but hockey was his passion. Hockey took Dad to many teams including the Prince Albert Mintos, Humbolt Indians, Clinton Comets, New Westminster Royals, and the Victoria Cougars. It was in Victoria one evening, at a party held by Cougars boosters that John met Janet, fell head over heels in love, and soon the two where married. In the spring of 1959 Dad signed a contract with the Brighton Tigers of the English National League and a short time later John, Janet, and newborn son Harry boarded a Cunard steamship bound for England. The following year they returned to Canada and settled in Kamloops where John joined his father Harry and brothers, Joe and Matt, in running the new family business, the Franklin Hotel.
Dad enjoyed many pastimes, hobbies, and activities throughout this life including the horses, curling, NFL football, biking, and walking the pups along the North Thompson. After a lifetime in Kamloops he had many friends, customers, and teammates whose company he enjoyed over the years. His strength and loyalty as a friend could only be outdone by his love and commitment to family. He was a loving husband, brother, son, and father … always loved, always missed, and always remembered.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of RIH 6 South, and especially Dr. Steven Johnson, for the care and compassion provided to our Dad … truly amazing.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be announced.
