July 28, 1939 – February 10, 2026
Bill Walton died peacefully at his home in Black Creek on February 10. He was 86.
In 1988, Bill was elected to Kamloops City Council and he served three terms until 1999. During this time, he was on the Hospital Board, the TNRD, and worked on the revitalization of the downtown area. An avid golfer, he was enthusiastic about opening of Eaglepoint Golf course, which was just up the road from his home.
Bill and family moved to Kamloops in 1974 from England, when TRU was Cariboo College, in order to set up a Fine Arts Department. At the time, art was taught in a basement of the Kamloops Indian Residential School. He oversaw the transition to portables on the university site and added a computer lab for animation and illustration to the Fine Arts offerings. Later, he was instrumental in incorporating Theatre into the department. He was Chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Department when he retired in 2005.
Bill had a lifelong love of theatre both as a performer and director. He was in the first WCTC production of Oliver in the upgraded theatre in Kamloops in 1978 and served on the board. He was active with the Kamloops Players, his favourite role having been Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, which played to full houses nightly. The move to Vancouver Island was in order that he could pursue his love of sailing and be closer to his sailboat. He continued being involved in drama, with some acting, but mostly directing and play writing.
Bill leaves behind his wife Linda, his sons Alex and Dominic (Agi) and grandchildren Levente and Flora. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. He was kind and thoughtful as well as funny and had a laugh which would fill a room. He was very much loved and will be sorely missed.
