Mr. Oswald “John” Weisbeck died in Kamloops, BC on October 30, 2016 at the age of 92. He is missed by his wife, Mary (Bianchin) of 68 years and by his children, Carol (Mike) Ostrikoff, Rodney (Lynette) Weisbeck and Rev. Fr. Fred Weisbeck, his sisters Isabel Kost and Rev. Sr. Joan Weisbeck, his five grandchildren: Derick (Joelle), Karen and Daniel Weisbeck, Chris (Michelle) and Ryan (Rebecca) Ostrikoff; eleven grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents John and Sofia Weisbeck (nee Lerner), son Donald (Linda) Weisbeck and sisters Rose, Helen, Matilda, Anne, Clara and brother Oliver.
John was born in Fox Valley, SK on June 1, 1924 and grew up in Prelate, SK. Following High School he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an officer during World War 11. After the war, John headed west to British Columbia where he met and married Mary Bianchin on June 1, 1948 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops.
In his early years in Kamloops, John worked at various jobs including the Navy Depot. He finally settled into the ownership of the lumber and building retail business (Irly Bird) both in Kamloops and Chase. John loved food, festive gatherings at his home, gardening, fishing and making wine. He enjoyed many travels beyond Canada. While in Chase, BC he served on the building committee for the Catholic Church and enjoyed many years working with close friends in the Knights of Columbus.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Most Rev. Bishop Joseph Nguyen and concelebrated by Fr. Fred Weisbeck and his brother priests on Monday, November 7, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m.
