Terry Karl Ausmus

Posted Jan 2, 2026 | 10:39 AM

December 16, 1942 — December 25, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry Karl Ausmus on December 25, 2025, at Trinity Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer, only eight days after his 83rd birthday.

Terry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Cathy, and his daughters, Tally and Marni. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Abby and Nolan; son‑in‑law, Jim Feigl; nephews Trent, Sam, and Ben; and nieces Cathy, Kelly, and Emma. Terry is survived by his sister Yvonne (Ted) Hesch, who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his brother, Nile Ausmus, and by his parents, Frank and Helen Ausmus.

Terry was born in Rimbey, Alberta, on December 16, 1942. The family later moved to Red Deer, where he attended school. In his early working years, he worked in the Arctic on seismograph crews and later administered driver’s tests for the Alberta DMV. Terry met Cathy in Red Deer in 1968, and they married in May 1969 before moving to British Columbia.

In Vancouver, Terry worked installing irrigation systems, and after settling in Kamloops, he spent several years selling mobile homes. He later earned his welding ticket and went on to work as a welder on a wide variety of projects throughout the city. Many of his happiest days were spent fly fishing with his father and enjoying camping trips with friends and family.

Terry had many interests and skills, and he took great pride in his craftsmanship. He was known for his reliability, skill, and willingness to tackle any job that came his way. Woodworking, however, was his greatest passion. He especially enjoyed sharing his smaller handmade pieces with family and friends, including bowls, cutting boards, and coasters. Each project was not only a reflection of his skill, but also of the care and generosity he carried into everything he did.

In recent years, Terry found joy in reading, spending countless hours in his favourite living room chair. He was an exceptional Scrabble player—few could beat him—and had a fondness for crossword puzzles, where his skill allowed him to take on even the most difficult challenges. Terry will be remembered for his quick wit and his dry, sarcastic sense of humour, which brought laughter and mischief to those around him.

The Ausmus family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at Trinity Hospice for the compassionate care they provided during Terry’s final days. You are very special people.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date to honour Terry’s life.
