Antonio Spina died suddenly on Monday February 12, 2018 at Royal Inland Hospital.
Antonio (Tony) Spina was born on the 11 of January 1937 in Castelsilano, Crotone, Italy. He was predeceased by his parents Tommaso and Domenica Spina, his siblings Giovanni and Vincenzo Spina and Vincenza Grande and his loving wife Caterina Spina in 2006.
He is survived and dearly missed by his daughter Domenica Spina and his son Tommaso Spina and nephews Luigi (Sherry ) Grande and daughter Marissa (Vancouver), Tom ( Corrie) Grande and their children Brendon, Katelyn and Madison(Calgary), and niece Serafina Grande ( Vancouver) and nieces Domenica Spina and Vincenza Spina and their families and two sister-in-laws Matilda and Maria and numerous cousins in Italy.
Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1964 landing in Pier 21 Halifax. From there he travelled by train to Kamloops BC and lived with his sister Vincenza and her family. In December 1966 he returned to Italy for a short engagement before his wedding in March 1967. Returning to Kamloops in April 1967, Antonio worked as a construction worker and later at Tranquille School and then Ponderosa Lodge where he took an early retirement to look after his wife who was ill.
Antonio was an avid gardener taking pride in growing his many vegetables and then harvesting them. He also loved the outdoors and nature and enjoyed fishing and mushroom picking. In his younger years, he played soccer and would walk to the games wherever they were in Kamloops and when he could no longer play he would often go and watch the games. In his later years, Antonio enjoyed his walks, especially walking around the neighborhood, chatting with the neighbors and getting to know them.
Prayers will be recited on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. The Reverend Father Paul Simms will celebrate the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the church. Reception to follow. Entombment will take place at 2:30 pm in Sage Valley Mausoleum.
