May 28, 1948 – February 28, 2017
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and friend Vincent Smith. Vince passed away on February 28, 2017.
He will be dearly missed by his long-time partner Bev Hewlett, daughter Trina (Leland) Harmon and their children Emily and Jacob; his daughter Cher-Lynn (Bridge) Sanderson and their children Alexandra, Rollin and Zak; his son Aaron (Kayla) Smith, their mother Sharen Smith and Bev’s entire family who feel privileged to have had him in their lives and watch them grow up. His brothers Lyle (Beth) Smith, Milton (Ruth) Smith, Dwayne (Anne) Smith, Wes (Christine) Smith, Kerry (Anne) Smith, his sisters Debbie (Henry) Sampson, Cindy (Gene Keats) McGhie, Rhonda (Brian) Dieni, Lu-anne (Emile) many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is predeceased by his Mother Mary Smith and Father Stanley Smith.
Vince’s family was first and foremost in his life. He loved to cook a turkey and have everyone for dinner. He loved to watch his grandchildren play ball and help them practice. Giving them all the tips he learned from his own ball career. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan. When he was in his teens he was scouted by a couple of MLB teams and offered to play in the MLB as pitcher, but sadly he blew his arm and that ended his ball career, at least in the major league. He went on to play in the local men’s baseball league and then up until about 5 years ago in the slow-pitch league.
He enjoyed golfing, playing ball, camping, fishing and was an avid hunter in his younger years. He shot his first deer when he was only 8 years old. He also loved to “play the horses” and acquired many “track” friends. Always the jokester, he was never short of a story to tell.
Vince had great work ethics. If you wanted a job done, he would do it to perfection. Not a lazy bone in his body. Vince was a faller by trade and he excelled at it. He could fall a 50 foot tree through a 10 foot opening.
Vince always had the time to stop and talk to people he knew, even strangers which caused him to be late on more than one occasion.
Our lives have forever changed with Vince’s passing. A void is left that will never be filled.
We would like to thank the Upper Nicola Indian Band very much for their heartfelt support. Thank you to the family and friends in the Chase area for honoring his life and journey in the traditional Native spiritual way.
The family is planning a “Celebration of Life” at a later date to be announced.
