April 8, 1933 – September 15, 2016
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Edward “Ted” Smith, well-known painter and a kind and gentle man. Ted was born in Vernon on April 8, 1933, the only child of stock buyer and brand inspector, James Alexander Smith and teacher, Alma Louisa Smith (nee Johnson). After spending his first years in Lumby, Ted’s family moved briefly to Barriere and finally settled in Kamloops in 1942. Upon graduating from high school, Ted worked for the CN and completed several years of university, first at Victoria College, and then at UBC before finding his way to the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University). He completed the 4-year diploma in painting and drawing, studying under teachers such as accomplished artists Jack Shadbolt and Don Jarvis. In 1964, he returned to Kamloops, which was to remain his home for the rest of his life. Ted dedicated his life to painting, exhibiting notably at the former Oasis Gallery, in private local exhibitions, and at the Kamloops Art Gallery, which curated many exhibitions of his work, including Ted Smith: Three Decades of Colour, April 16 to May 17, 1992 (Solo exhibition), Home Grown: Five from the Region, Dec. 10, 2000 to Feb. 4, 2001 (Group exhibition), Ted Smith and A.Y. Jackson: Familiar Territory, March 26 to May 28, 2011 (Group exhibition), and most recently, a major solo exhibition, Ted Smith: A Retrospective, June 28 to August 30, 2014. His works are found in many private collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. A lover of music and particularly opera, Ted was also an avid fly fisher and spent much of his leisure time trout fishing on lakes in and around Kamloops, often together with well-known Kamloops angler, Jack Shaw, and with close friend, Phil Claydon. Much of his work reflects the landscapes of these trips. Ted was predeceased by his parents, close cousin, Tom Newbury, life-long friends and supporters, Reinhold and Lore Dominik, and long-time artistic supporter and former Executive Director of the Kamloops Art Gallery, Jann LM Bailey. He leaves in mourning members of his ‘adoptive’ family, Annette, Barbara and Kathrine Dominik, and close life-long friends, Phil and Mary Kay Claydon, Marie Scott, Martha Hivon and Nigel Minchin (owners of the former Oasis Gallery), and Gerhard Lietz, as well as many friends in the art community. We would like to thank Dr. Susan Vlahos for her compassionate care of Ted in his last years and the Kamloops Art Gallery for their continuous support of his work. A celebration of life will be held for Ted at the Kamloops Art Gallery on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Kamloops Art Gallery.
