February 19, 1938 – March 8, 2017
Alex passed away peacefully on March 8, 2017 at the Gemstone Care Center in Kamloops, BC. He was born February 19, 1938 in the small city named Medicine Hat, Alberta.
He came to Barriere as a small boy. He started working at Newberry’s Sawmill, and later in the Fadear Creek Mill and Birch Mill doing different shifts. He took care of horses for the Sabyan family on the old farm up the North Barriere Lake Road.
He always had an ice breaker to open up a conversation with a stranger. In his younger days, Alex could often be found tinkering with one of his vehicles or riding bareback on a horse. Later in life, he’d head to the hills for an impromptu drive, or make the 7-mile trek from home to town on his trusty-rusty old bike.
He is survived by his son, Darral Andrews (Calgary), and one sister, Ruth (Milton) Smith (Terrace). He also leaves behind a niece, Juanita Gill (Cranbrook) and her son, Jordan McLellan, (Calgary) and three nephews, Kurt Smith and Roger Smith (Terrace) and Bobby Hartley (Calgary). He was pre-deceased by his father Alexander Slavichak (1974), his mother Emma Slavichak (Pichtigen) (1980), his sister Rose Gill (2000), his infant sister Lillian Violet (1955) & Darral’s mother, Margaret Rose Andrews (1969).
Those who knew Alex were continually amazed by his determination and perseverance in the face of his many health set-backs.
Many thanks from the family to his care-givers from Barriere Home Support, Forest View Place in Clearwater, and Ponderosa Lodge and Gemstone Care Centre in Kamloops.
There will be a ‘Celebration of life’ in his honor at the Barriere Community Hall, Borthwich Avenue, on June 20, 2017, 1 pm to 4 pm.
