December 6, 1931 – February 13, 2026
Phyllis Millward passed away peacefully in Kamloops, British Columbia, on February 13. Born on December 6, 1931, in Merritt, British Columbia, she grew up in Merritt and later Mission, B.C.
Phyllis developed a lifelong appreciation for hard work and farming, while also enjoying the finer things in life.
She cultivated a deep love of music, history and needlework — interests that brought her joy and connection throughout her life. Phyllis married Arnold Carlson, and together they settled in Chinook Cove, British Columbia. Shortly thereafter, they welcomed their three children: Deb, Ron and John. Following Arnold’s passing, Phyllis moved her young family to Kamloops, where she worked as a paralegal to support her children with strength and determination.
In Kamloops, Phyllis met Peter Millward, and they later married. Together they built a full and happy life, eventually moving to Metchosin, British Columbia. There, Phyllis grew her love of golf and enjoyed many lively games of bridge with dear friends. She cherished her morning walks with the dogs along the beach, through the Arbutus trees and on the Galloping Goose Trail.
An accomplished needle pointer, Phyllis generously shared her beautiful cross-stitch creations with her children and grandchildren. These treasured pieces will remain lasting reminders of her love and artistry.
Phyllis had a passion for travel and explored many corners of the world with Peter, inspiring that same curiosity and sense of adventure in her children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed visits with her grandchildren, doting on them at every opportunity, taking them out for lunch and visiting every tourist attraction they could find pamphlets for on the ferry.
A voracious reader, Phyllis was always ready to discuss her latest book, particularly works on Russian history or by Canadian authors, two of her favourite subjects. She was equally well known for her sweet tooth. Even in her final days, Phyllis could always find room for dessert—a philosophy she enthusiastically passed along to her great-grandchildren, who often invoke her when dessert is denied by their own parents.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Debra Winiski (Dan) of Barriere, B.C., Ron Johnson (Jan) of Comox, B.C., and John Carlson of Crowsnest Pass, AB, her stepchildren Deborah Staples (Al) of 100 Mile House, B.C., Russell (Kathy) of Noose Bay, B.C., and Tim of Australia, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are fortunate enough to call her Grandma or GG (never great-grandma). The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Ridgepoint Retirement
Residence, as well as the staff at Royal Inland Hospital and Ponderosa Lodge, for their care and compassion.
At Phyllis’ request, there will not be a celebration of life. Donations in memory of Phyllis to Doctors Without Borders would be greatly appreciated.
You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the Millward family.
