February 8, 1954 – May 19, 2025
Penelope Anne Burgess, born on February 8, 1954, passed away at 71 years of age on May 19, 2025, at the Kamloops Hospice in Kamloops, British Columbia. At her time of passing, she was fortunate to have been a wife, mother, stepmother and grandmother. She was known to often have fresh baking around and was always available to loved ones for a phone conversation or a visit.
Penny was born in Russell Manitoba Hospital. She lived in Inglis, Manitoba with her family; Otto and Elsie Liske, and brother Randy Liske, until the age of three. The family then moved to Alberta within the Calgary area. Penny played sports and was active in her school. She graduated from Chestermere High School and shortly after married Jim Long in December 1972. They had their first child, Ryan, who was born at the University of Alberta Hospital in September 1976, while the family was residing in Vegreville, Alberta.
Jim and Penny then moved to Calgary, Alberta, and eventually to Okotoks, Alberta where Penny gave birth to their second son, Darren, at the Calgary General Hospital in April 1980. Jim and Penny then moved to the village of Delburne, Alberta, where they put down roots and had their final child, Jenna, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital in January 1985. Penny was active in the community, working as a librarian, being on the town’s council, and eventually working at the family business as a receptionist/bookkeeper.
In 2006, Penny enrolled at SAIT College for a certificate in Medical Transcription. In September 2007, she married Brian Burgess, and gained three stepchildren: Melissa, Christina and Michael. She finished her career as a medical transcriptionist at Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary. Penny and Brian lived in Calgary until they retired and relocated to Black Creek, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. Penny’s final move brought her to Kamloops, British Columbia.
Penny was known as someone who loved to laugh, spoke her truth, rooted for the underdog, and loved interacting with people. She was very social. Penny loved genealogy, as she wanted to learn the stories of the people that had passed before and wanted what came before to be known to herself and her family. Penny accomplished a lifelong dream when she traveled to the homeland of her ancestors, with her daughter Jenna, to Ukraine and Poland on a genealogical tour that Penny had planned and organized. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, music and entertaining company. She found great peace and strength from her faith her whole life, and specifically in her retirement on Vancouver Island.
Penny is survived by her three children: Ryan Long and his daughter Hayden Long, Darren Long, Jenna Long and her brother Randy Liske.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, June 9, 11:00 a.m. at Foothills Lutheran Church, 3104 34 Ave. NW, Calgary, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation to the Kamloops Hospice. Info required
