January 23, 1932 – October 28, 2023
Surrounded by his four children, our dad found peace after living a long and rewarding life and has now joined our mother, Elisabeth, and his twin brother Frank.
Dad was born on January 23, 1932, in Koeslin, Germany and already, at a young age, faced real hardship after first losing his father and then having to flee his home. Set with his plumber’s trade, he, along with his brother, emigrated to Canada in 1955 in search of a new existence. Our dad was a pioneer and a builder of this young country and chose to become a Canadian citizen as soon as he was able. He met our mother, also from war torn Germany, and the two of them soon married and started a family. These two never looked back and prospered through hard work and determination. They were both grateful to Canada for the new home it provided and for all its opportunity. Mostly, they were thankful for peace.
After several years in Regina, Sask., our parents moved the family to Kamloops, B.C. in 1964 where dad started his own company, Kamloops Mechanical Contractors. His pride in assembling things the ‘right way’ and to last forever, solidified his reputation as a master tradesperson. This dedication to precision lives on in hundreds of Kamloops homes and commercial buildings today.
Dad would remain in business until 1990 after which he began work for B.C. Assessment Authority as a real-estate appraiser, a position for which he was well suited and one he loved very much.
Extremely well informed on world affairs geopolitically and on the economy, dad never missed checking the price of lumber, and above all, loved tendering advice. We benefitted from our dad’s vast experience and knowledge which always made life easier for us.
Our dad worked all the time so that we could all enjoy a wonderful life growing up. He and mom first built the Kamloops Lake cabin, which was then followed by the cottage at Magna Bay, B.C. in the Shuswap, a little piece of paradise we’ve enjoyed for over 50 years.
Education was extremely important to our parents, and they ensured we each received one.
He is greatly missed by his four children Edna (Manfred), Esther (Norbert), Sue-Ann (Greg) and Paul along with his seven beloved grandsons, Kurt (Olivia), Tristan, Adrian (Maddi), Evan, Alex, Noah, and Jordyn all of whom he was so very proud. His great wish was that they would all do well in life.
Our wish is to celebrate dad’s life with family and friends in the coming spring when the sun shines and the flowers bloom. We will make details available and ask that you please join us then.
