August 30, 1927 – November 19, 2016
Iris Mary Daphne Orton nee Ramsay passed away with her son and daughter near her, at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 19th, 2016 at the age of 89.
Iris was pre-deceased by her husband Edwin Orton and is survived by her daughter Jill Rodrigues, son in law Claudio, and their two children, Alexander and Sydney, as well as her son David, daughter in law Sylvia and their five daughters Stephenie, Jilaine, Erika, Kayla and Angelica.
Iris was born in Pomeroy, Northern Ireland in 1927 and always had a dream to see Canada. After completing her sick kids nursing training in London, she hopped on a boat and headed to her first overseas posting at the Red Cross Hospital of St. Joseph’s Island in Ontario. This spirit of adventure soon took her 3,000 miles west across Canada to Kamloops where she was the head nurse of paediatrics at Royal Inland Hospital. In Kamloops, she met Edwin and they set out on a life journey that has touched dozens of people in the most remarkable ways.
A woman of boundless optimism, grace and kindness, Iris was independent, strong and full of life, right up to when she “got away” as the Irish say.
She will be deeply missed, but lives on in the influence of her quiet, but powerful, witness of Jesus and his love for all mankind.
Pastor Harold Wiest will conduct the Funeral Service in Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 6th Avenue and Douglas Street, Kamloops, at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery, followed by a reception at St. Andrew’s.
