July 27, 1957 – October 15, 2016
Leslie Muir passed away October 15, 2016 at the age of 59. She was born July 27, 1957 to Keith and Margaret (Bubs) Brown and lived her entire life in Kamloops. Leslie reluctantly attended her early years of schooling but with her mother’s loving prodding she attended Douglas Lake, John Todd, and AE Perry. Leslie graduated from Norkam Senior Secondary in 1975 and worked in Kamloops as a gas jockey, a child care worker, parts delivery girl and finally as a receptionist for Balco Industries.
In 1979, at the age of 21, she married Gordon Muir. Soon after, at the age of 22, Leslie developed the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis but wasn’t fully diagnosed until 3 years later. Once diagnosed she was able to continue her employment with Balco until the winter of 1986. She lived with Gord at their Kamloops home until 2006 at which time her doctors diagnosed that her increased level of care required placement into a Long Term Care Facility.
Although Leslie was faced with many physical struggles she rose above them with class and dignity. After visiting with her, people would always say they came away feeling like a better person. She was proud, determined, loving, patient and had an incredible memory. Her very quick wit and keen sense of humour provided much laughter and enjoyment for Leslie and all those around her. She loved fast cars, first her Dad’s T bird and then her own red Camaro which she reluctantly parked in 1987 when she had to rely on her wheelchair for mobility. She also loved and adored her dogs, Bimbo, Tasha, and Chelsea.
Leslie never let her mobility slow her down from enjoying the things she wanted to do. Travelling to the sun and sand were highlights of her life and she often spoke about the trips she took with Gord, her parents, cousin Brenda (Doug) and long-time friends Garry and Mary. They travelled to Hawaii, Florida, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta as well as the Yukon and Alaska where she could put her feet in the ocean and sip her favorite Appleton’s rum. She loved clothes and shopping and would embrace any opportunity to visit the mall and her favorite clothing stores. And of course there was Christmas and getting her picture taken with Santa and family members was always on the top priority list of things to do. Les also really enjoyed Blazer’s hockey which she attended for many years and developed a special ‘in’ with the mascot Digger.
The Dreamweaver’s are a close group of individuals who also have MS. Leslie was a proud member of this group and together with family and friends participated in the annual Kamloops MS walk to help raise money and awareness.
Leslie touched many lives and will be remembered with love and missed every day. She is survived by her husband Gord, father Keith Brown, big brother Jim (Sally) Brown and older sister Kathie (Tom) Dunn. She also leaves to mourn her nephews Sean and Kevin; nieces Lindsay (Ryan), Allison and many favorite cousins, friends and caregivers. She was predeceased by her Mum in 2014.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the many care aids and staff from Home Support Services, Ponderosa and The Hamlets. We would like to extend a special thank you to the The Gemstone Care Center for their outstanding support and careful attendance in all aspects of Leslie’s physical care and emotional wellbeing.
A Memorial Service will be held at Kamloops Funeral Home at 285 Fortune Drive on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 1:00 PM. Following the Memorial, and at Leslie’s insistence, there will be a joyful Celebration of Life at the Brock Activity Center at 9A – 1800 Tranquille Rd. (located in Brock Shopping Center)
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Kamloops Chapter of the MS Society in Leslie’s name.
