December 24, 1930 – March 29, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Nonno, and Great Nonno, Michele “Mike” Silano.
On Good Friday, March 29, 2024, at the age of 93, Dad passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Born on December 24, 1930, in Villanova Del Battista, Avellino, Italy, Mike’s journey through life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family. Mike’s legacy is one of love, sacrifice, and resilience.
He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Rosa, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage and great love until her passing in 2003.
He leaves behind his son John (Saverina), daughter Rosie, grandchildren, Michael (Natalie), Johnny (Adam), Rodney (Tasha), Brandon (Enfys) and great grandchildren, Bella, Mia, Hunter, Lane, Ivy, Hartlee, Hudson and Brandt. He was blessed to meet his great granddaughters, Bella and Mia from Australia and treasured the time spent with them.
Mike immigrated to Canada in 1955, leaving behind his homeland in pursuit of a better life for his family. Settling in Albert Canyon, Mike joined his brothers Giovanni and Alfonzo and their families. He persevered through challenges until he secured a job with CP Rail. It was in 1957 that he was joyfully reunited with his wife, Rosa, and young son, John. Together, they welcomed the arrival of their second child, Rosie.
In 1961, Mike’s dedication led him to relocate his family to Kamloops, where they purchased their first home on Seymour Street. He continued to work tirelessly, eventually finding fulfillment as a custodian with the school board. Mike was respected by both the staff and students alike. Mike found immense joy in the company of friends, particularly the Iadarola, Cundari, Stankoven, and Capone famalies, with whom he shared countless cherished memories.
Mike had a great love for gardening and wine making from his homegrown grapes which he had mastered to perfection. His children and grandchildren were the centre of his life. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family. After losing his wife, Rosa, in 2003, Mike showed great courage and strength as he continued his journey in life. He continued to live in his home and mastered cooking, making the best bread and pasta sauce. He kept himself busy each day. He joined a bowling team, went for daily walks, and always attended the 10:30 mass on Sundays at OLPH Parish. He had a great faith in God. He had a warm smile for everyone he met and found gratitude in life’s simple pleasures.
Though he may be gone, his spirit will forever remain a guiding light for all who were fortunate enough to know him. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff, nurses, and caregivers at Overlander Residential Care for their unwavering compassion and care over the past 4 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the British Columbia Alzheimer’s Society, Kamloops chapter in Mike’s memory.
Should friends desire to pay their last respects to Mike, a viewing is scheduled on Monday, April 8, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Schoening funeral home Chapel.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Kamloops.
