Michael was predeceased by Jack Whelan, Joan Whelan, Maureen Laird, Jason Laird and Zackary Laird.
Michael Thomas Whelan was born March 8, 1952, in Kelowna, B.C. He and his family moved to Kamloops in 1958 where he attended elementary schools in Valleyview and Brocklehurst, then high school at Norkam. Mike excelled in track & field and soccer while growing up. He joined Air Cadets and lead the drill team in national competitions. Mike and his high school sweetheart, Cristina Phillips, were married June 3, 1972. He and Crissy lived on De Monte Street in Brocklehurst for 52 years and this is where they raised their children, Heather Dawn and Kristopher Michael. Mike began working at the pulp mill in 1976 and retired 37 years late in April of 2013. On his days off he enjoyed working on renovations projects. His woodworking and painting skills were amazing. Reading was Mike’s favourite pass time, particularly history and politics. On April 17, 2019, Mike was diagnosed with genetic lung cancer, with a life expectancy of 2 years. A strong will and determination granted him almost 4 additional years. He passed away on December 3, 2024. Mike will be remembered as a kind, loving man by his neighbors, friends and family.
Mikey, you will forever hold a special place in my heart.
– Your Crissy.
