Mary Ellen Curnow (McElroy)

Born January 24, 1930 in New Westminster as the only child to David Lawrence McElroy and Georgina McElroy (Kent.) As an infant they moved to Highland Valley to ranch where she grew into a true pioneer learning to do everything at a young age. In 1942 they acquired the Highland Valley lodge with her family guiding guests through the area with her string of horses often caught from the wild herds, she knew the highland valley and Pimainus plateau like the back of her hand.
Predeceased by her husband Ron Curnow. They had acquired the Curnow ranch from his aunt where they made their home and ran a successful business of raising quality cattle, horses, hay, and sweet corn. She was a respected horse breeder and known for her quality cattle. Running cattle on the Pimainus plateau where she would spend much of her life riding, advocating, and spending countless hours at the lakes with her friends. She was happiest out in the hills on a horse. When ever she could she would go team penning, barrel racing, or to gymkhanas.
Having no kids of her own she enjoyed visits from nieces and nephews and friends where she could tell her stories and always getting a laugh. She is predeceased by her sister-in-law Shirley Curnow and survived by her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law; Les (Bridgette) Curnow, Muriel Dennison, Joyce Walkem and many generations of nieces and nephews. Mary passed away peacefully August 2, 2022 at the age of 92. She is beloved by many and will be fondly remembered for her generosity, sense of humor, laughter, stories, and teachings. A celebration of life will be held at the Curnow Ranch August 27, 2022 at 1pm at the Curnow Ranch 10300 Merritt spences bridge hwy.
