April 17, 1932 — July 23, 2025
Marlene Dorothy Matton (née Swaine) passed away on July 23, 2025, at the age of 93.
Mom was born on April 17, 1932, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the youngest child of Christopher and Jessie Swaine. Mom and Jessie moved to Kamloops in about 1950, following in the footsteps of her brother, and was married to Alexander Derry Thomson in 1954. Most of Mom’s adult life was spent in Kamloops, interrupted by 5 years in Penticton from 1958 to 1963. While busy raising a young family Marlene began a long full-time career working in the medical imaging department in the Penticton General Hospital which continued at the Royal Inland Hospital on the family’s return to Kamloops in 1963. Mom loved her sports, including bowling and a long career in the local softball scene, starting with her early days with the Kamloops Silver Streaks and continuing into her mid 30’s, playing second base with great skill. Mom’s greatest joy was her children and grandchild, constantly pushing them along and happily celebrating their successes. Early retirement years allowed Mom to meet and marry Roland (Rolly) Matton, move to Chase, BC and to enjoy many winters in California, Arizona and Mexico with golf clubs always at the ready. It was wonderful to see them have so many happy years together.
Survived by Heather Diane Thomson-Jackson (James) of Sooke, BC, Linda Maureen Thomson of Kamloops, Robert David Thomson of Victoria, BC and granddaughter Nina Josephine Thomson of Vancouver, BC and many friends and relatives. Mom was predeceased by her husband Roland Matton, her son Gordon Alexander Thomson and her brother Alvin Swaine. There will be no formal service at Mom’s request.
